The “Tachles” Program for learning everyday-life Hebrew, which we remember was born and developed by emissaries of the North American Department for Diaspora Activities, and which has become widely distributed and translated into other languages. The program was also distributed in England, South Africa and Australia, and the “Tachles” conversation book has already been translated into French, Hungarian and Dutch. Sarah Fox, director of the “Tachles” Program is continuing to develop the program, market it, train instructors and plan future steps. As part of the program’s marketing process a video was made that briefly shows the principles of the program and invites interested parties to contact the Department for Diaspora Activities and to start to learn Hebrew easily. It should also be noted that the director of the “Tachles” Program, Sarah Fox participated in the seventh Hebrew language conference “Lashon Rishon” (First Language) that was held mid-February and covered extensively in the previous report. The program director participated on a special panel for teaching the Hebrew language during the conference and introduced “Tachles” in the aim of creating future collaborations in order to embed “Tachles” into Hebrew study frameworks in the Diaspora.
As the “Tachles” Program develops the North American Department for Diaspora Activities receives more and more requests to provide a solution to the unique Hebrew language needs of the Israelis’ second generation. For the most part, the children of Israelis that live in the US can speak everyday Hebrew, but they have a poor vocabulary and lack Hebrew reading and writing skills. The Department staff decided to accept the challenge and start developing a special Hebrew program for children of Israelis – “Talking Tachles”. Rosie Ben Ami, shlicha of the Metro-West Federation is leading the development of the “Talking Tachles” Program, she joined the department staff as part of a unique and successful collaboration. The Program uses advanced methods that stimulate thoughts and the imagination, and demand that the participant read words in Hebrew, find facts about Israel and the Israeli culture in the different media channels and write short texts by themselves, within the framework of an experiential activity. During February three basic units of the Program were completed which will now be sent to be professionally designed and marketed.
Development of “Tachles” for the children of Israelis in North America was born out of the prolonged work on an existing project of the local Department for Diaspora Activities staff titled “Mishelanu”. The “Mishelanu” Program is a program for second generation Israeli students which offers them a home and a group to which they can comfortably belong. The program offers social activities in Hebrew, deep identity clarification processes and enrichment with Israel and Zionism related content. The Department operates the “Mishelanu” Program in two areas – Northern California (Bay Area) and the East Coast.
