Early March Chair of the World Zionist Organization's Department for Diaspora Activities, Gusti Yehoshua Braverman, made an intensive visit to South Africa which included participating in the “Zionism and Leadership” Seminar, which was organized by the WZO Diaspora Activities Department Shaliach in Johannesburg in collaboration with Jewish Agency Shlichim. 40 leaders from the different youth groups and the SAUJF participated in the seminar. “Beit Ha’am - Z-talks” workshops and activities were arranged which she conducted and led. Additionally the Department Chair delivered a speech to the group of young leaders. During the visit the Department Chair met with heads of the local Zionist Federation, the head of the Jewish Agency’s delegation, representatives of Jewish and Zionist institutions and organizations and groups of Israelis living in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Later in the visit the Chair of the Department for Diaspora Activities participated in the annual hasbara for Israel conference that was held by the South African Zionist Federation together with “South African Friends of Israel”, in Johannesburg. The conference which was held for the third year in a row was a success, moving beyond all expectations of the organizers. The 300 plus delegates from across the South African political spectrum came to Johannesburg in order to participate in the conference and included representatives of the African Christian Democratic Party, Democratic Alliance, African National Congress, Inkatha Freedom Party.

Also in attendance were delegates from 150 organizations – Jewish, political and Christian from all over South Africa and other African countries (Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Nigeria, Congo, Ghana and Cameroon).

Speakers from the South African Christian communities participated in the panels, lectures and workshops together with special representatives from Israel, including the Chair of the World Zionist Organization's Department for Diaspora Activities and Prof. Yehuda Skornick, Vice President for Foreign Affairs and head of the Raphael Recanati Institute, in the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya. The key message that was made clear at the conference was that the Jewish Diaspora and Israel are not alone in their defense on the image and character of the State of Israel. In fact, Israel has millions of friends in South Africa that love and support Israel and stand behind the Zionist ideology.
