“Limmud” England marked the end of a busy year of activities for the Department for Diaspora Activities in the United Kingdom. This was the second year that the Department has been involved in programming at the conference and it was the most successful to date. Nir Cohen, the Department’s local emissary in the UK, organized a number of events throughout the conference celebrating “Hebrew Language Month” and Eliezer Ben Yehuda’s birthday by holding practical, everyday Hebrew classes, a “headphones party” with Hebrew music, Hebrew karaoke, as well as additional Hebrew related events for children and families. All of these events were took place in conjunction with the local Israel Ministry of Immigrant Absorption (MOIA) “Israeli House”.
In addition to offering content promoting and celebrating the Hebrew language, the Department hosted a panel on the relationship between the local Jewish community and Israelis living in England, attended by over 80 participants, where the panel raised serious questions about the gaps between local Jews and Israelis living in London. This provided a platform for discussing avenues for outreach to the local Israeli community, and served as a historic event, marking the first time that a public dialogue between Jews and Israelis took place in the community in a productive and open discussion. Moreover, this discourse has exceeded the limits of London and became a state -level discussion.
The final WZO initiated panel at Limmud brought together youth movement leaders from Bnei Akiva , Habonim Dror , FZY , and LGY, to discuss the question of Israel's image in the youth movements , and the picture of Israel that we would like to introduce our campers as educators. The panel confronted difficult questions about Israel's image and how it should be presented among students. The debate was titled “Israel education: should we present the land of milk and honey or the more complex picture?”.
