Hebrew - The Language that Connects Us All

January 15th 2024 - February 5th 2024

“Hebrew – Our Connecting Language”

Hebrew Language Week was observed at the National Institutions Building with a special exhibition, entitled “Hebrew – Our Connecting Language,” initiated by the Zionist Council in Israel in conjunction with the Academy of the Hebrew Language.

About 20 men and women whose lives were turned upside-down chose one word that articulates for them the significance and context of this period.

Among the panelists were: Dany Cushmaro, Yosef Haddad, Captain A., the mother of one of the hostages, Haim Jelin, and other people of note. The words they chose form the subject of twenty poster designs, reflecting their strong personal emotions and those prevailing at a national and societal level.

Together, they form a unique, compelling mosaic with the power to depict current reality. The words chosen were as follows: cow-shed, distanced, faith, family, friendship, home, homeland, identity, Israeli-ness, life, light, love, partnership, resourcefulness, shlichut (sense of mission), spirit, unity, well (be’er), and yearning (kisufim).

A special exhibit based on a series of Hebrew words relating to the current situation selected by a panel was displayed at the National Institutions building. The same exhibit has been on display at train stations around Israel and at bus stations and bus stops in Tel Aviv.

Campaign for Hebrew Language Day

In honor of this week's Hebrew Language Day, the World Zionist Organization launched a campaign in which words that we all hear endlessly throughout the war were replaced with their official alternatives in Hebrew, according to the Hebrew Language Academy.

Hebrew - The Language that Connects Us All

On the occasion of Hebrew Language Day, the Zionist Council in Israel and the Hebrew Language Academy present a special project of words that symbolize the era. The words were chosen by twenty women and men - a grieving mother who lost her son, a combat soldier, in battle, mothers whose children were kidnapped, a policewoman who fought in Sderot, evacuated teenagers from the south and the north, residents of the Gaza Envelope, IDF fighters, public figures, doctors and volunteers - all the beautiful faces of Israel. The chosen words and the reasons that accompany them reflect strong personal feelings and social and national feelings.

Put together, the words create a mosaic that describes these days:
Love, light, unity, faith, well, home, identity, life, Israeliness, yearning, homeland, family, spirit, distance, evil, cowshed, partnership, mission and resourcefulness.

The project is published throughout social media networks and in a set of designed posters, which are delivered free of charge to schools and public bodies. An exhibition of posters will be shown in the near future throughout the country.

A Special Hebrew Language Site Following October 7th and the "Swords of Iron" War

The World Zionist Organization has developed and launched a site with a selection of materials for teaching Hebrew as an additional language around the subject of the "Swords of Iron" war.

The materials include texts, songs, videos, stories, signs, photos, posts on social networks and more. All the materials were carefully selected with the aim of exposing the learners to various aspects of this historical period and providing them with significant content in learning the Hebrew language.

The site can be used to develop all language skills - reading comprehension, listening and viewing, oral and written expression - and is geared for different levels of learners.

Among the materials on the site is a dictionary with words and phrases related to the war translated into several languages such as English, French, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese.
