Anniversary of the death of Aharon David (A. D.) Gordon
Aharon David (A. D.) Gordon was born on 6 Nisan 5616, June 9, 1856, in Troyanov in the Russian Empire. He died on 24 Shvat, 5682, February 22, 1922. Gordon was active in the Zionist movement, he took part in the Zionist Congress, and was a pioneer, agricultural laborer, philosopher and the spiritual leader of the pioneers during the Second Aliyah and Third Aliyah. A. D. Gordon was the uncrowned leader of Hapoel Hatzair in the Land of Israel, and the founder of an ethical movement that in his lifetime and after his death was called “the religion of work.” He emphasized the centrality and uniqueness of the Land of Israel: “We aspire to create in the Land of Israel a new people of Israel, and not a colony of the people in the Diaspora, not a continuation of the exile in a new form... We who have been uprooted must become familiar with the soil and prepare the soil that we are coming to be absorbed in...”
