Shimon Agranat

Shimon Agranat

  • Was born on September 5, 1906, in the United States.
  • He received a Hebrew education from private teachers and in Hebrew schools in Chicago.
  • In 1922 he visited the Land of Israel with his parents and studied for three months at the "Herzliya" gymnasium in Tel- Aviv.
  • In 1929, he received the degree of Doctor of Laws at the University of Chicago.
  • In 1930, he immigrated to Israel.
  • In April 1932, he qualified as a lawyer.
  • After a period of internship at an attorney's office in Jerusalem, he opened a law office in Haifa.
  • Between the years 1950-1955, he taught as a foreign teacher of criminal law in the Faculty of Law of the Hebrew University.
  • In 1940 he was appointed as a judge of the Magistrate's Court in Haifa.
  • In 1948 he was appointed as the President of the District Court in Haifa.
  • In 1950 he was appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court. A permanent position for the President of the Supreme Court.
  • Between the years 1960-1966 he served as the head of the Zionist Supreme Court.
  • Between the years 1965-1968 he served as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
  • In 1968 he was awarded the Israel Prize in Legal Sciences.
  • Between the years 1965-1976 he served as president The Supreme Court.
  • In 1974 he chaired the state investigation committee, the " Agranat Committee".
  • Beginning in 1975, he served as a member of the advisory committee of the Organization for World Peace by Law.
  • Between 1975-1976, he participated in criminal law seminars at the Faculty of Law of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
  • During his years at the Supreme Court, he wrote many judgments, which discussed crucial and critical issues. Agranat served as a judge in many trials that shaped the legal image of the State of Israel and its unwritten constitution. He sat on the "Kastner affair" and Eichmann appeals, which brought the Holocaust of European Jews to the Supreme Court's doorstep.
  • Ha'am v. Sharhapani: This ruling, known as the "Voice of the People High Court", forms the basis of Israeli constitutional law. 
  • Agranat was instrumental in the creation of the "Judicial Bill of Rights", a set of legal precedents, which relied on the Declaration of Independence as expressing the nation's values. On 09/05/1976 he retired from office.
  • He passed away on 08/10/1992.
