Meir Silverstone

Meir Silverstone

  • Was born in London on March 27, 1916.
  • He studied law in the United Kingdom and became a practicing attorney.
  • He was active in the Torah Ve'Avodah movement and served as its chairperson
  • Served as a delegate to Zionist Congresses.
  • In December 1948, he immigrated to Israel and worked for the Ministry of Welfare in Jerusalem and in the Legal Department of the Tel Aviv Municipality.
  • In 1952, he was appointed Legal Adviser to the Ministry of the Interior, and in 1960 he became the ministry’s Director General.
  • In 1966, he was appointed the first Chair of the National Council for Planning and Building.
  • In 1970, he retired from the Ministry of the Interior and opened a private law practice, where he worked until 1999.
  • He was active in the boards and committees of numerous public and voluntary institutions in Jerusalem, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Ezrat Nashim Hospital (Herzog), Alyn Hospital, Variety Israel, the Freemasons, Yeshurun Synagogue, and others.
    He was among the founders of the Association of British Immigrants in Israel and served for several years as its chairman.
  • In 2008, he was awarded the title "Yakir Yerushalayim" in recognition of his Zionist activity, his contributions to the State of Israel and to Jerusalem through his public service, and his extensive work in local organizations and institutions.
  • He passed away on January 15, 2009, and was buried in Jerusalem.
