School Principal

A person who goes on shlichut to an administrative position in a school or teacher’s college accepts upon himself responsibility, by virtue of the position, for creating a vision and managing an entire education system. The principal molds the school’s educational course, prioritizes, participates in the selection of the teaching staff and is responsible for providing the staff with pedagogical instruction. The parents’ committee and board of governors that manage the school are generally strong entities that have their own educational agenda.

The selection of an Israeli principal does not necessarily reflect a community emphasis on Israel’s importance. The community often places a greater emphasis on the quality of its private school and on the success of its graduates in their higher academic studies, so that the school will be attractive to the parents who must pay significant sums of money in order to send their children to the local Jewish school. The principal-shaliach will often find himself negotiating between his educational goals and the local reality, thus resulting in a situation that often requires compromise and sometimes even leads to conflict.
