Memorial of Ethiopian Jews

Background

Beginning in the early Eighties a wave of immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel via Sudan started.  By the end of the decade, some 17,000 immigrants arrived. Due to the harsh conditions that these immigrants faced during the journey, thousands perished and did not make it to Israel.

EthiopianJewryMemorialIn 2007 a monument was erected on Mount Herzl in memory of these victims who died on their way from Ethiopia to Israel through Sudan.

Over the years, various attempts have been made to document the names of the victims in order to add the names to the memorial, but until now, this undertaking has not been carried out in an official capacity by the Israeli government.

Starting on November 27th 2011, the Israeli Parliament passed two resolutions for memorializing the names of the victims as well as a production of a documentary.

On August 30th, 2012, the Government of Israel signed an agreement with the World Zionist Organization for implementing this project.

The purpose of the project is to create an organized collection of the names of all the victims, and to commemorate them by establishing a special memorial monument for Ethiopian Jews on Mount Herzl.  In addition, an educational video documentary will be produced to memorialize and advance the legacy of Ethiopian Jews and their immigration to Israel through Sudan.
