29 November Activities

On November 29, 1947 (Kislev 29, 5708) the United Nations Assembly (UN) resolved on termination of the British Mandate in Palestine and the creation of two independent states there: a Jewish state and an Arab state. The leadership of the Jewish yeshuv accepted the plan.

On this significant date we wish to reinforce knowledge about the State of Israel, its values and symbols, and to stimulate dialog on why Diaspora Jewry needs the State of Israel and what it symbolizes for them.

The Department staff invites you to commemorate the 29th of November on a participatory and enriching evening activity that will reinforce your understanding and connection to the State of Israel.

Thousands of students and youth are expected to participate in events which will take place all over Israel and will last a week. The week-long events are the initiative of the World Zionist Organization and the Zionist Council and will include mayors and representatives from the WZO and the Zionist Council.

In Kiryat Ata the festivities started yesterday, when over 700 students from the Rogezin School took part in the activities. The students enjoyed a film produced by the Zionist Council just for November 29th. The film integrated historical clips with current dramatic clips, which tell the chain of events and present the dilemmas facing the heads of the WZO and the Jewish Agency regarding the plan to partition the land into two states in 1947: one Arab and one Jewish.

The stage drama “Herzl Returns to Life” played with actors Doron Shemesh and Ilan Malachi. The play shows the realization of Herzl’s vision in our days and portrays how the Zionist missions of those times are still relevant today.

Today at Heichal HaTarbut in Netanya there will be an event with approximately 1000 students from local schools. Throughout next week, additional events will take place all over the State of Israel.

 Archives

The political activity in the months preceding the end of the mandate was pronounced in documents, some of which are filed in the archival files of the political bureau and in personal archives such as Moshe Sharet's. The joy that took over the Jewish Yishuv in Israel is displayed before you in some of the photographs kept in The Archives.
